Pinacoteca Civica di Reggio Calabria
The Civic Art Gallery of Reggio Calabria is based at the Theatre "F. Cilea "(link cilea).
The Gallery exhibits paintings of particular historic and artistic interest, among which are the tablets painted by Antonello da Messina ("S. Girolamo in penitenza" and the "Tre angeli apparsi ad Abamo"), both made between 1460 and 1465; works by Mattia Preti ("Ritorno del Figlior Prodigo"), built in 1656; works of Giuseppe Benessai ("La Quiete"), and works by Renato Guttuso ("Pescatore Scillese"), built in 1949.
There are also many works of Calabrian artists, and of the Neopolitan School painters from the period between the first half of the 800 and the first half of the '900. Among these deserves to be mentioned a work attributed to Luca Giordano, depicting "Cristo e l'Adultera".
Inside there are also numerous marble busts and sculptural works.
Among the sculptures, deserves mention the copy of Bernini Laooconte, found at the ancient Archbishopric Seminary of the city.
