Chiesa Immacolata Madre dei Poveri

The Church dedicated to the Immaculate Mother of the Poor, is commonly named  "Cresia 'the Pipi" and it is located in the upper part of the historical center of Reggio Calabria. Of the original Byzantine church, almost entirely underground and dedicated to St. Salvatore, today remain the southern and northern walls in which it is still possible to read graffiti in greek and see drawings and talismanic symbols. The structure had three apses. The church was rebuilt in the Renaissance period during the sixteenth and seventeenth century and dedicated to St. Saviour. During the reconstruction of the three Byzantine apses they were replaced by a single large extant apse. The building was subject to a further reconstruction to early '800 and dedicated to St. Paul, by Paolo Albanese called "Paulu Pipi", who decided to reuse the ruins of the church of St. Saviour. The church is characterized by Arabic-style elements and is composed of a single nave square with a semicircular apse.
