The marble memorial stone, was inaugurated in May of 1932. The bronze central statue, made by the sculptor Bonfiglio from Messina, depicts Athena Promachos, the goddess Athena fighter, which is to defend the city of Reggio.
At the end of the renovation and modernization of the seafront in 2001, the monument with the statue of Athena was placed on the (pontone) in the middle of the theater but. Originally the statue that protected the city pointed to the sea, later Mayor Italo Falcomatà wanted the statue to be turned towards the city itself.
